Improve learners’ confidence and measurable progress—especially in speaking—by providing clearer feedback and more meaningful indicators of real-world language improvement.

Business problem

Motivation drops when progress feels invisible.

Duolingo successfully attracts and engages millions of users, but advanced and motivated learners often struggle to understand whether their practice translates into real-world language skills.

For the business, this leads to:

  • Decreased long-term engagement

  • Missed opportunities for premium value

  • Difficulty retaining advanced learners

The challenge was to support deeper learning outcomes without disrupting Duolingo’s playful and accessible core experience.

User problem

Practice feels repetitive when progress is unclear.

Users experience language learning as:

  • Uncertain, especially regarding speaking improvement

  • Frustrating when feedback feels generic

  • Demotivating when progress is hard to measure

As a result, learners may continue practicing but lose confidence in their actual improvement.

Solution

Personalized feedback bridges practice and real-world fluency.

We proposed an AI-powered assistant and credit-based system that:

  • Provides real-time speaking feedback

  • Supports personalized practice sessions

  • Makes progress more visible and actionable

The solution integrates seamlessly into Duolingo’s existing ecosystem while offering additional premium value.

Process

We focused on motivation, not just learning mechanics.

We explored where motivation declines and why progress feels abstract.

Activities included:

  • Desk research on language learning motivation

  • Surveys with active Duolingo users

  • User journey mapping to identify friction points

  • Problem framing focused on confidence and feedback

Rather than redesigning lessons, we focused on how progress is communicated.

Prototype

Exploring learning progress through interaction.

We prototyped an enhanced learning flow featuring:

  • Clear progress indicators for speaking and practice sessions

  • AI-assisted feedback to support confidence building

  • Reduced friction between exercises

  • Optional guidance moments without interrupting flow

The prototype explored how better feedback and visibility could increase motivation while keeping learning lightweight and engaging.

Outcome

Clear feedback leads to stronger confidence and engagement.

The concept demonstrates potential to:

  • Increase learner confidence

  • Improve engagement among advanced users

  • Strengthen premium subscription value

For the business, it creates a differentiated learning experience focused on real outcomes.

Retrospective

Calm, clarity, and control proved more effective than speed.

What Worked

  • Treating confidence as a success metric

  • Focusing on feedback rather than content volume

What I Learned

  • Progress visibility is essential for motivation

  • Learning tools must support emotional reassurance

Next Steps

  • Usability testing with advanced learners

  • Iteration on feedback clarity and pacing
